ABOUT CHANDLER

Chandler is much more than a satellite of Phoenix AZ. It is a big city with its own culture and history. Buildings from the early 1900s remind you of its past while towering high rises establish it firmly in the present. At the I-10 Automall, we are proud to live and serve drivers in this community.

Big Names in Chandler’s Growth

Chandler wasn’t always a suburb of Phoenix. That happened slowly over time. In the 1890s, a new homesteader named John H Dobson could have had no idea that he would influence the area enough that a road would be named for him to this day. He established Chandler’s first bank, and the Historical Society recognizes the Dobson Building, built around 1912.

Arthur E Price is credited with writing the incorporation charter when it was formally declared a city in 1920. His name is attached to the historical Price Building and Price Road.

The San Marcos Hotel, built in 1913, really set the city off a new direction. It was part of the vision of Dr. Alexander Chandler for whom the city was named. Hollywood stars retreated to this special resort during the depression, World War II, and into the 1950s. You can still see the original San Marcos, now a part of a larger hotel complex.

In the 1940s, a boy called Tex moved to Chandler. His father started a gas station where the boy discovered a passion for automobiles. In 1951, at 21 years old, Tex Earnhardt became the youngest person ever to be awarded a Ford franchise. His name is still found on numerous dealerships within the family’s large dealership group.

Fast Facts About Chandler Economy

At the turn of the century, farming and ranching were the only economic engines of Chandler. Corn and cotton were key crops. The arrival of the railroad made it possible for the economy to grow and diversify.

About that same time, you might have seen ostriches wandering around an area farm. The big bird’s feathers were in big demand for women’s hats, but that trend quickly passed.

When Williams Air Force Base was founded in the 1940s, it had some effect on neighboring Chandler. By 1950, the small town had a population of 3,800. It grew slowly up to 1980 when contractors began building suburban residential areas for Phoenix.

Aerospace brought firms to the area. Northrup Gruman is a big employer, for instance. This focus helped attract tech giants like Motorola, MicroChip, NXP Semiconductors, and Intel. Finance and banking companies are another major employer. These include Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and PayPal.

The small town had grown to more than 236,000 people in 2010. The 2020 Census recorded more than 275,000 residents, and the numbers have already grown to more than 276,000.

According to census data, the average commuter is on the road for 24.9 minutes. The I-10 Auto Mall, like Interstate 10, is along the city’s western border. Other major corridors include the Price Freeway (Loop 101) and the San Tan Freeway (Loop 202).

Chandler AZ Lifestyle

As the town grew into a metropolis, it has earned top rankings that reflect well on the culture and lifestyle. The 2016 list of 10 Best Places to Raise a Family listed it at #2. The livability study by AreaVibes saw it ranked in the top five. It gets top marks in Arizona as one of the best for young professionals and one of the best suburbs.

The outdoors play a big role in life for many Chandler residents. Golf has been big since the San Marcos Hotel owners built the first golf course in the 1910s. Now you can find executive and championship courses at Ocotillo, Lone Tree, Springfield, Ironwood, and many more.

Our I-10 corridor puts you on the road to nearby Cactus League stadiums. Baseball spring training for 15 MLB teams is serious fun in February and March.

Named a 2016 Playful City USA, Chandler has many parks including Tumbleweed where you’ll find the Arizona Train Museum and a variety of festivals including the annual Ostrich Festival.

There are many different places for hiking and other wildlife experiences. Bird watching is a favorite activity at the Riparian Preserve. Regional parks offer a look at the desert world around Chandler. It’s just minutes away to the South Mountain Park or the Estrella Mountain Park.

With a good car, you’ve got so many scenic drives close by. It may be the trek up to Sedona, to the Painted Desert, or all the way to the Grand Canyon. Archaeological wonders from the Sinagua, Hohokam, Puebloans, and other ancient peoples are nearby, such as the Casa Grande Ruins and Montezuma’s Castle.

I-10 Auto Mall Makes it Easy to Shop New or Used Cars

When you want a new or used SUV, truck or car, you can be sure you’ll find variety when you go to the I-10 Auto Mall. There are many dealers in one easy-to-reach area. With so many choices, it is a good place for everyone from serious shoppers to window shoppers.

There’s something for everyone here. Affordable brands and luxury makers are represented with new car dealerships in close proximity.

Any auto expert will tell you that driving more than one brand is a good idea before you purchase a new vehicle. That’s where I-10 Auto Mall really helps. You don’t have to drive all over Chandler or Phoenix to find the choices you want.

You can get two or even three test drives of different brands under your belt in just one morning or afternoon of car shopping. If you are looking for the right pickup, you could test drive the Chevy 1500, Ford F150 and Toyota Tundra right in a row.

If you are looking for a family SUV, you can sample the Ford Explorer and Expedition, Chevrolet Traverse, Tahoe and Suburban, and the Lexus RX 350 3-row. If looking for the right off-road SUV, you might choose a Land Rover and then compare it to the more affordable, but equally capable Ford Bronco.

Of course, there are also used car dealerships in the I-10 Auto Mall. You can visit one of these or simply utilize the used car inventory at brand dealerships such as Toyota or Ford.
